Há exatos 200 anos, nesse dia do ano de 1822, o Príncipe Regente, Dom Pedro, declarou que não obedeceria as ordens das Cortes Portuguesas para deixar o Rio de Janeiro e voltar para Lisboa. Essas viam a iminência do Brasil tornar-se independente definitivamente de Portugal. 

No papel, figuravamos como "reino unido"; mas, na prática, as Cortes queriam mesmo era fazer com que voltássemos à condição de colônia; porém já era tarde, pois o próprio regente sinalizava liderar o processo da separação, juntamente com José Bonifácio, e a Princesa Leopoldina, sua esposa e exímia estrategista política. 

Dom Pedro tencionava seguir o conselho de seu pai, o Rei Dom João VI, que ao partir de volta a Portugal, no ano anterior, disse-lhe que caso se tornasse inevitável a independência do Brasil, que assumisse o protagonismo dela, dando prosseguimento à dinastia aqui nos trópicos; evitando assim que usurpadores lançassem mão da Coroa, que lhe pertencia por herança.

Corajosamente, e indiferente às ordens das Cortes - uma espécie de Assembleia Constituinte Nacional com infinitos poderes, como o de nossa Suprema Corte hoje no Brasil, que se mete em tudo o que não lhe compete - o Príncipe Regente decidiu que não iria atendê-las. 

Pressionado pelos político que lhe entregaram um abaixo-assinado com 8 mil assinaturas que lhe pediam para permanecer no Brasil, o Príncipe declarou "Se é para o bem de todos e felicidade geral da Nação, digam ao povo que fico"! Assim, Dom Pedro resolveu encarar o que viesse pela frente, a fim de tornar o nosso país independente. 

Que a valente atitude do nosso primeiro mandatário, ante a tirania das Cortes Portuguesas, sirva de exemplo e inspiração ao atual, diante dos abusos de nossa Suprema Corte.

Exactly 200 years ago, on that day in 1822, the Prince Regent, Dom Pedro, declared that he would not obey the orders of the Portuguese Courts to leave Rio de Janeiro and return to Lisbon. These saw the imminence of Brazil becoming definitively independent from Portugal.

On paper, we figured as "the united kingdom"; but, in practice, the Cortes really wanted us to return to the status of colony; however, it was too late, as the regent himself indicated that he would lead the process of separation, along with José Bonifácio, and Princess Leopoldina, his wife and excellent political strategist. 

Dom Pedro intended to follow the advice of his father, King Dom João VI, who, upon leaving Portugal, the previous year, told him that if the independence of Brazil became inevitable, he should assume its leading role, continuing the dynasty here in the tropics; thus preventing usurpers from taking hold of the Crown, which belonged to him by inheritance.

Courageously, and indifferent to the orders of the Courts - a kind of National Constituent Assembly with infinite powers, like that of our Supreme Court in Brazil today, which gets involved in everything that is not its responsibility - the Prince Regent decided that he would not attend to them . 

Pressed by politicians who handed him a petition with 8,000 signatures asking him to stay in Brazil, the Prince declared "If it's for the good of all and the nation's general happiness, tell the people I'm staying"! So, Dom Pedro decided to face whatever came ahead, in order to make our country independent.

May the brave attitude of our first representative, in the face of the tyranny of the Portuguese Courts, serve as an example and inspiration to the current one, in the face of the abuses of our Supreme Court.
